Over the years, thousands of Homesafe fire sprinkler systems and fire suppression systems have been installed, from bespoke solutions requested by the fire service to protect the vulnerable, to multi-million pound apartment projects.
One of the first Homesafe "Blueflow" fire sprinkler systems was fitted in Scotland in 1998 at the Bridge of Allen. A test burn was set up to demonstrate the effectiveness of the fire suppression. Following this success, a similar test burn was set up for a Homesafe "Greenflow" ® fire sprinkler system on the Isle of Man in the same year.
The concept behind the "Greyflow" ® fire sprinkler and rainwater harvesting system evolved from development work in the Netherlands in 2000.
In the Isle of Man, fire sprinklers were legislated in their Building Regulations 2003.
Building (Scotland) Regulations, 2004 (in force from May 2005): fire sprinklers mandatory in all new care homes, high rise (18m) buildings, sheltered accommodation and enclosed shopping centres.
The Aquaflow low cost, low pressure mist suppression system was developed in 2005.
In England and Wales, fire sprinklers were cited as an option for the first time in the revised Approved Document B (2007).
In February 2011, the Welsh Assembly voted unanimously to require sprinklers in all new housing. Members passed stages 3 and 4 of the Domestic Fire Safety measure that would see sprinklers fitted as law in houses, flats, care homes and halls of residence in Wales.
