From a fire safety perspective, Building Regulations are commonly met by “Passive Fire Protection” such as travel distances to exits, internal fire doors and fire retardant materials within the fabric of the building.
Fire sprinklers are a form of “Active Fire Protection” as they actively suppress a fire, and can be used to decrease some of the passive requirements.
By looking at the combined effect of all the fire safety measures in a property, it is possible to design a much safer building for less cost.
