2008 RIBA Stirling Prize winner, sprinklered by Homesafe

Accordia Living, designed collectively by architects Alison Brookes, Feilden Clegg Bradley and Macreanor Lavington, has won the most prestigious prize in British architecture.

The RIBA Stirling Prize, in association with The Architects’ Journal, is awarded by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) to the architects of the building which has been the most significant for the evolution of architecture in the past year.

Kevin McCloud, who presented the Channel 4 coverage live from the awards ceremony in Liverpool, hailed the Accordia community as "the new benchmark in British housing."

The scheme comprises 187 strikingly innovative townhouses and apartments. This is high density living at its best, making exceptional use of internal and external spaces. Key fire engineered house types feature Homesafe fire sprinkler systems.

From RIBA's perspective, the development proves that good modern housing sells, that a committed local authority can have a very positive influence on the design, that a master plan with a range of architects can be successful and that the very best of architecture need not rely on gimmicks.

Homesafe Group Sales Director, William Butler, present at the event, congratulated Countryside Properties, describing them as developers who clearly have a responsible, sustainable and dynamic vision.

"Their strategy to appoint three architectural practices demonstrates their commitment to ensure variety within their scheme."

"Countryside are consistent clients of Homesafe, and our fire sprinkler systems feature in a great many of their developments, further testament to their forward thinking vision."

"For the fire engineering world, this is a key development. We worked with Alison Brookes Architects and Arup to achieve a fire engineered design which incorporated the leading Greenflow ® flushing sprinkler concept. We also send congratulations to Architects Alison Brookes Associates, on their bold, brave, fire engineered design."

Previous winners of the Stirling Prize include the Scottish Parliament Building at Edinburgh and London's famous "Gherkin" (the Swiss Re Building).

The prize is named after the British Architect Sir James Stirling (1926-1992). Sir James was one of the most important British architects of his time, and throughout his career was a progressive thinker and designer.

Architects, Fire Engineers and Building Control Officers who wish to appreciate some of the fire engineering concepts within the project are invited to attend a Homesafe RIBA CPD seminar. Homesafe are members of the RIBA CPD providers network. For further information, please email cpd@homesafegroup.com
